SCENE 25: POLLY CONFRONTS TAWAT’S MOM

INT. DINER-NIGHT

Tawat’s mom was in the kitchen making two cups of coffee. Polly shows up in front of her and quickly inserted couple of cash right by her apron’s pocket.

TAWAT’S MOM

What’s this?

POLLY

Spare me with

the details.

How you met and what

you did. Just stay away

from him.

TAWAT’S MOM

Him?

POLLY

Chai. He’s a good

son. He’s actually very

smart but unfortunately

the smartness ends right

by his school’s gate.

You see when it comes

to practical things in life

like dealing with

someone like you, he’s

actually clueless and stupid.

He has no idea

where this will lead.

TAWAT’S MOM

What are you really

trying to say Polly,

where do you think I’m

leading your son to?

POLLY

Towards heartaches.

TAWAT’S MOM

Polly, I think you’re

over thinking things.

You’re certainly

exaggerating everything.

Chai and I are just

friends. We actually….just

met to be more accurate.

POLLY

Friends? How can you be

his friend, you’re like

what, my age?

Like what I said, I don’t

care for details.

I already gave you

my haul for the night.

I’ll give you more

when I can.

Tawat’s mom follows Polly as she serves a plate of steak and fries at a truck driver customer. Polly starts to sing, “She laughs”

POLLY (SINGS)

MUSIC CUE: “SHE LAUGHS”

She laughs

At the crazy tales she spins

At the truck guy

Who just stared

At his dried up steak and greasy fries

He got up

And left a buck

For the laugh

As he hope that his next diner stop

Won’t be like her

A diner bore

She grab

The lousy buck

As she check

The diner clock

There’s still four hours left

Before she goes back

To the trailer she can barely pay

Where a guy half her age

Waits for those tips

If not, he’ll beat her blue

She laughs, what else can she do but laugh?

She laughs

At the crazy tales she spins for tips

The girl on those tales is her

Who dreams big and end up diner stuck

She laughs, what else can she do but laugh?

She laughs, what else can she do but laugh?

TAWAT’S MOM

(Returns the crumpled

cash to Polly)

I don’t need your

money.

POLLY

Are you serious?

Do you think what’s

going on between you

two is love?

Do you think Chai

will end up with

a waitress like you?

I have big dreams

for my son.

Not this diner junk

in front of me.

I don’t want him to

end up like me, stuck

like this. Because with you

that’s going to be his destiny.

Polly follows Tawat’s mom back at the kitchen.

TAWAT’S MOM

Polly there’s nothing

going on between

me and your son.

Like I said earlier, we’re

just friends.

POLLY

So the tips won’t

cut it? What will?

TAWAT’S MOM

(Hands Polly the

cup of coffee)

It seems we need this

more than the customers.

POLLY

(Sips the Coffee)

Sorry, I didn’t meant

to be that direct.

But go on. I’m waiting.

What will it take

for you to stay

away from Chai?

TAWAT’S MOM

I once had a son

like yours.

I did everything to

protect him.

But I failed.

POLLY

Are you my Karma?

I love my son,

surely life will not play

this trick on me.

I admit, I’m not perfect.

There are things that

I did in life that back then

I knew will haunt me

later on in life.

I guess, that’s what’s

happening tonight.

TAWAT’S MOM

You’re really a mother.

Chai and I met by

chance. The same

chance that connects

our lives together

and forces us to be

stuck with tonight.

POLLY

To hell with that chance.

He’s my son.

There are others you

can buy. You don’t

need to settle for

Chai.

TAWAT’S MOM

I never bought him

Polly.

POLLY

Are you saying,

it’s love?

TAWAT’S MOM

I’m just saying,

drink your coffee,

it will calm your nerves.

Chai is just helping me

with something.

I’ll tell you, when it’s ok to tell

POLLY

(Drops the coffee cup)

Are you pregnant?

This is crazy.

What are you, 50?

You can’t possibly be pregnant

or are you?
