SCENE 21: MEETING TAWAT’S MOM

INT. TAWAT’S BEDROOM-NIGHT

Tawat’s mom tapped Chai’s shoulder. Chai looks up, he saw the framed photo of Tawat and his mom hanging from the wall.

TAWAT’S MOM

Who are you?

How did you get here?

CHAI

I can explain.

TAWAT’S MOM

Explain before I

bloody scream.

CHAI

Tawat, I’m here

because of him.

Tawat’s mom suddenly slaps Chai at his face.

TAWAT’S MOM

Don’t you mention

my son’s name.

Who sent you here?

Is it the land lord

because I’m behind my

rent?

CHAI

Tawat did. I know

your son. I was just

talking to him, few

seconds ago.

TAWAT’S MOM

How can that be?

He’s dead.

CHAI

I wish I can explain

everything more clearly,

but I can’t.

TAWAT’S MOM

So you’re saying

he sent you here?

CHAI

I really don’t know.

He took me to this

pool where he wanted me

to swim a lap for him

if he breaks his

record. And tonight he

took me to you.

He needs something.

I can strongly sensed

that. He said, I need to

think with

my heart.

Tawat’s mom sat by the bed, next to Chai. She held Chai’s hand.

TAWAT’S MOM

Sorry, I slapped you.

CHAI

It did not kill me.

That’s ok.

TAWAT’S MOM

Four years ago, while

training home at this

indoor pool, he drowned.

It was ruled as a heart

attack. I was coming home

from work when I got

a call. Minutes later I was

staring at his lifeless body

lying cold at the morgue’s

stainless steel table.

CHAI

Sorry.

TAWAT’S MOM

You have a special

gift. You can see spirits.

How is my son?

CHAI

He seems ok.

TAWAT’S MOM

You love my son?

Is that why you’re here?

CHAI

I don’t know.

I’m not sure.

TAWAT’S MOM

Are you his friend..or

his boyfriend?

CHAI

Friend, I guess.

I’m not really sure.

TAWAT’S MOM

Is he here right now?

CHAI

No. But I think

he sent me here

for something.

But it seems, I only

brought pain.

TAWAT’S MOM

The night before he

drowned, I had a

fight with him. I accused

him of stealing his

dad’s wedding ring.

I was very upset.

That was the only

memory of his dad.

CHAI

It is the ring then.

Where is the ring?

TAWAT’S MOM

I don’t know.

He had it when he

drowned that afternoon.

CHAI

That’s why he

wants me to go

down the pool.

He must have

dropped it down there.

I need to find the

ring. That’s what he

wants from me.

TAWAT’S MOM

No…wait. His gym bag.

Tawat’s mom stands up and looks under the bed. She found the gym bag and pulled it out, it was dusty, she opens it up and threw the stuffs at the floor: two shirts, empty bottled water, a pair of swimwear, she searched the pockets around the bag, it was empty. There was no ring.

TAWAT’S MOM

It’s not here. I never

opened his bag since

I took it home from

the morgue.

CHAI

What does the ring

looks like?

TAWAT’S MOM

It’s a regular gold

ring. No distinguishable mark,

just a slight scratch

at its edge that you

can see when shined

under the light.

CHAI

Why do you think

he wants that ring?

TAWAT’S MOM

He wanted to buy

this car. Probably he planned

to either pawn or

sell it, or did he sold or

pawned it?

CHAI

I think I see the big

picture now. He wants

me to find the ring so

I can return it back

to you. That will give

him peace.

Tawat’s mom hugged Chai. And that’s when Chai noticed that Tawat’s mom was wearing a waitress uniform, the same as his mom, Polly. She’s working at the same diner.

TAWAT’S MOM

Let me know how

I can help you. If you

need anything, you know

where to find me.

CHAI

Thank you.

TAWAT’S MOM

Do you need a lift?

I can drop you off,

it’s almost morning now.
